"Vincent"

|

Vincent, by Tim Burton (1982)

Vincent Malloy is seven-years-old,
He's always polite and does what he's told,
For a boy his age, he's considerate and nice,
But he wants to be just like Vincent Price.

He doesn't mind living with his sister dog and cats,
Though he'd rather share a home with spiders and bats,
There, he could reflect on the horrors he's invented,
And wonder dark hallways alone and tormented.

Vincent is nice when his Aunt comes to see him,
But imagines dipping her in wax for his wax museum.

He likes to experiment on his dog Abercrombie,
In the hopes of creating a horrible zombie,
So he and his horrible zombie dog,
Could go searching for victims in the London fog.

His thoughts though aren't always of ghoulish crime,
He likes to paint and read to pass some of the time,
While other kids read books like Go Jane Go,
Vincent's favourite author is Edgar Allan Poe.

One night, while reading a gruesome tale,
He read a passage that made him turn pale,
Such horrible news, he could not survive,
For his beautiful wife had been buried alive!

He dug out her grave to make sure she was dead,
Unaware that her grave was his mother's flowerbed.

His mother sent Vincent off to his room,
He knew he'd been banished to the Tower Of Doom.
Where he was sentenced to spend the rest of his life,
Alone with the portrait of his beautiful wife.

All alone and insane, incased in his doom,
Vincent's mother burst suddenly into the room.
She said, "If you want to, you can go out and play"
"It's sunny outside, and a beautiful day."

Vincent tried to talk, but he just couldn't speak,
The years of isolation had made him quite weak,
So he took out some paper, and scrawled with a pen,
"I am possessed by this house, and can never leave it again."

His mother said, "You're not possessed,
and you're not almost dead!"
"These games that you play are all in your head!"
"You're not Vincent Price, you're Vincent Malloy!"
"You're not tormented and insane, you're just a young boy!"

"You're seven-years-old and you are my son,"
"I want you to get outside and have some real fun."

Her anger now spent, she walked out through the hall,
And while Vincent backed slowly against the wall,
The room started to sway, to shiver and creak,
His horrid insanity had reached it's peak!

He saw Abercrombie, his zombie slave,
And heard his wife call from beyond the grave,
She spoke from her coffin, and made ghoulish demands,
While through crackly walls, reached skeleton hands.

Every horror in his life, that had crept through his dreams,
Swept his mad laughter to terrified screams!

To escape the madness, he reached for the door,
But fell limp and lifeless down on the floor.

His voice was soft and very slow,
As he quoted The Raven, from Edgar Allan Poe,
"And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor,
Shall be lifted--Nevermore!"

OUTDOOR: The World Wildlife Fund Catches Some Rays

The Sun Never Sets On Great Cause Marketing. DraftFCB/Toronto has, appropriately enough, "harnessed sunlight," as ACD Chris Taciuk puts it, to deliver a message about global warming and rising ocean levels.

The Toronto-based board will be up into June, at which time it will no longer be properly situated in the sun's path. The idea, however, may travel to other WWF regions. The agency is of course familiar with the Leo Burnett "Sundial" board for McDonald's, a heavy medalist on the awards show circuit right now and a resident of the Print & Design Rate the Ad Top 10 since it was first posted; but as Taciuk points out, there's room for more than one such solar-powered idea, especially when it's about something as important as the future of the planet.

realidade. Contamos convosco!

Eye on the TV
Cuz tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavour it happens to be
I am killed by the husband
Drugged by the ocean
Shot by his own son he used to poison
Through this tube, as kills trickle by
This black little story is no fun
Until someone dies

Don’t look at me like I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky crying ‘why oh why?’

Cuz I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all need it, too
Don’t lie

Why can’t we just admit it?
Why can’t we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
Knee to the grave, noble
Writers just tore his soul
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die from a good safe distance
Vicariously I am
While the whole world dies
You all feel the same so why can’t we just admit it?

Blood, like rain, come down
Drum on, grave and drown
Caught in the pothole
You're carnivores and voyeurs
Still, heaven sends me to sing to the death rattle

La la la la la la lie
La la la la la la lie
La la la la la la lie
La la la la la la lie

*talking in the background*

Credulous, the bestial desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Put your hand onto your head, please
Believe and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive - so it is
So it's always been

We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

Vicariously I
Live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I

Dark Knight Viral Laughs Last

Warner Brothers - The Dark Knight

It's never too early to fire up a viral campaign. At least that's the mindset of Warner Brothers, which is running a nifty, evolving effort for The Dark Knight, the sequel to Batman Begins. Though the movie's not out until summer 2008, a host of sites have sprouted from the official Warner Bros. homepage for the film, which only offers the instantly recognizable bat sign. But click through, and you're led to another site which displays a simple political ad for Harvey Dent, played by Aaron Eckhart. The clear culprit is 42 Entertainment, already rebounding from the Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero web assault one of the sites is registered to the firm.

It doesn't sound fascinating at first, but in the last few days, a mocking alternate site would pop-up from this page featuring a defaced Harvey Dent ad with red and white marker smeared on his mug. Subsequently, visitors were able to interact with this site, and by entering an email address and verification code, they were sent emails with cryptic passages and an X,Y coordinate. By clicking on the specific coordinate, they were then able to remove one pixel from the marred ad, and by spreading the word, thousands of pixels were removed to reveal a close-up shot of Dark Knight villain The Joker, played by Heath Ledger in full makeup and all. With the identity revealed, visitors to the site now are greeted by "Page Not Found" in a black background. But hold your mouse and highlight the page to reveal an endless series of "Ha Ha"s, which likely denotes that Warner is having the last laugh when its comes to raising the viral stakes.

Whales

Dear friend,

On May 27th, we march for the whales!

We are in the final sprint to Anchorage, Alaska, where the IWC (International Whaling Commission) meeting will be held on May 28th. Here, once again, the future of whales will be decided.

For the past few months we've been working hard, and together with you, we've achieved many goals. Because of our campaign several countries have changed their votes from assisting Japan to protecting whales; others which weren't represented before have decided to attend. The emails we asked you to send to politicians last week are still pouring in.

All of this is encouraging, but we're taking the final step, and it is the most important one.

On May 27th, join the Global Big Blue March. Participate in the March held in your own town, or set up one yourself!

You can march to the main square or monument in your city! Is the sea or a river nearby? Swim, surf or use your kayak! It's up to you. Just make it Big, Fun and Blue! Get started today. Click here to share your plans. You can invite all of your friends, upload your videos and pictures, and get in touch with hundreds of people who want to campaign for the whales with you.

We need lots of cities and lots of people around the world. This has never been done for whales before.

We must make sure the whales are heard at the IWC Meeting in Alaska. The delegates who will decide on their future must know that thousands of people around the world want to stop the whales from being killed, and are determined to get out on the streets and defend them!

We're confident we can achieve much more, but remember, time is very short. Click here, upload your own march now!

Together, let's form an ocean, a Big Blue Ocean, defending the whales.

Kind regards,

Shane

Shane Rattenbury
Oceans campaigner

PS Invite all your friends, start uploading your videos and pictures to promote your march today! Click here and start campaigning!

PSS Do you have friends or family in another town? Tell them about the Big Blue March, and encourage them to set up their own event!

Scientists cure cancer, but no one takes notice

By: David McRaney

Posted: 1/23/07

EDITORS NOTE:

Since the original publication of this article we have been inundated with responses from the public at all walks of life. It is important to note that research is ongoing with DCA, and not everyone is convinced it will turn out to be a miracle drug. There have been many therapies that were promising in vitro and in animal models that did not work for one reason or another in humans. To provide false hope is not our intention. There is a lot of information on DCA available on the web, and this column is but one opinion on the topic. We hope you will do your own research into the situation. So, we have added links to resources at the end of this column. If you are arriving here form a linking website like Fark, then those links will not appear because they tend to grab only the text. For those visitors, here is a link to the original research: www.depmed.ualberta.ca/dca

END NOTE

Scientists may have cured cancer last week.

Yep.

So, why haven't the media picked up on it?

Here's the deal. Researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada found a cheap and easy to produce drug that kills almost all cancers. The drug is dichloroacetate, and since it is already used to treat metabolic disorders, we know it should be no problem to use it for other purposes.

Doesn't this sound like the kind of news you see on the front page of every paper?

The drug also has no patent, which means it could be produced for bargain basement prices in comparison to what drug companies research and develop.

Scientists tested DCA on human cells cultured outside the body where it killed lung, breast and brain cancer cells, but left healthy cells alone. Rats plump with tumors shrank when they were fed water supplemented with DCA.

Again, this seems like it should be at the top of the nightly news, right?

Cancer cells don't use the little power stations found in most human cells - the mitochondria. Instead, they use glycolysis, which is less effective and more wasteful.

Doctors have long believed the reason for this is because the mitochondria were damaged somehow. But, it turns out the mitochondria were just dormant, and DCA starts them back up again.

The side effect of this is it also reactivates a process called apoptosis. You see, mitochondria contain an all-too-important self-destruct button that can't be pressed in cancer cells. Without it, tumors grow larger as cells refuse to be extinguished. Fully functioning mitochondria, thanks to DCA, can once again die.

With glycolysis turned off, the body produces less lactic acid, so the bad tissue around cancer cells doesn't break down and seed new tumors.

Here's the big catch. Pharmaceutical companies probably won't invest in research into DCA because they won't profit from it. It's easy to make, unpatented and could be added to drinking water. Imagine, Gatorade with cancer control.

So, the groundwork will have to be done at universities and independently funded laboratories. But, how are they supposed to drum up support if the media aren't even talking about it?

All I can do is write this and hope Google News picks it up. In the meantime, tell everyone you know and do your own research.

From ONE.org _ Mother's Day

|

Every year, 10 million mothers lose a child under the age of 5 to a completely preventable disease. This Mother's Day, you have an opportunity to give these mothers, and yours, a special gift.

Just this morning Congress introduced the U.S. Commitment to Global Child Survival Act. It will provide resources for simple and cost effective tools to save the lives of the 30,000 children who die each day from treatable infections, waterborne illness, malnutrition, and the half a million mothers who die from complication in childbirth.

1.

Today, you can honor mothers around the world by sending a letter to your members of Congress asking them to support the Global Child Survival Act.

2.

Then send a special ONE Mother's Day greeting to let mothers know you did this in their honor.

Sponsored by Representatives Betty McCollum (D-MN) and Christopher Shays (R-CT) and Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Gordon Smith (R-OR), the act sets realistic and effective guidelines for child survival programs and quadruples funding for these programs over the next two years.

This bill doesn't just save lives; it empowers mothers to provide for their children so they can safely give their children the gift of life.

Write your member of Congress and encourage them to support the Global Child Survival Act and send a ONE Mother's Day card.

The scale of America's response to this great tragedy has been woefully inadequate, but we have the power to save lives if we take action today on behalf of mothers around the world.

Happy Mother's Day,

Susan McCue, ONE.org

Mutts _ o regresso

Coolest new car colors

A car that changes from pink to white as it drives by? The latest developments in manufacturing make fancy paint colors mainstream.

By Peter Valdes-Dapena, CNNMoney.com staff writer
POSTED: 2:40 p.m. EDT, April 12, 2007
paint.01.jpg

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- As I drove north on the New Jersey Turnpike recently, a Mary Kay cosmetics saleswoman in a Cadillac DTS passed me on the right, her big car's paint job hitting me like a punch in the eye from the Pink Panther.

As it zoomed on past the car gradually changed color. Starting at the edges, the pink faded and turned to a pearly white.

Back in New York City, during the media preview days for the New York Auto Show in early April, I spent some time talking to Chris Webb, General Motors' Exterior Color and Trend Designer. He helped design the paint used on that car.

"We have a dedicated line that just runs the Mary Kay cars for them," said Webb.

If you want drive a color shifting pink-pearl Cadillac yourself, you'll have to get a job with Mary Kay and start moving some serious eyeliner for the privilege.

Color shifting pigments aren't entirely new - Mary Kay has been using that paint on its cars for almost a decade - but they have now entered the mainstream and are bringing new popularity to once boring shades.

Silver isn't silver anymore. Black might not always be black. Around the edges of the wheel wells it might glisten in purple or gold. Where the body curves inward, hints of blue or red might shine from the shadows.

The secret is extra layers of coating embedded with tiny metal flakes. The standard process for painting a car in a factory was - and still is - to lay down a layer of color and cover that with a clear coat. The clear coat gives the color a wet-looking shine and a sense of depth.

Now, the colored base coat can be covered with a second translucent layer that could be a different color. And within that second translucent layer there could be little flecks of aluminum and those flecks can, themselves, be another color. Or several other colors.

"The pink you saw had a solid pink base coat with silver layer sprayed on top," said Webb.

At the extreme of color shifting paints are the ChromaFlair colors created by JDS Uniphase. These pigments use colorless flakes which refract light creating colors in the same way that butterfly wings and bird feathers do.

A ChromaFlair color called "scorched penny" is used in the 2006 special-edition Scion xB Release Series 4.0 from Toyota. It changes colors dramatically from one viewing angle to another, going from a bright copper to nearly black.

The painting process required for these sorts of effects is expensive, so car companies charge more for them. But that just makes them more alluring.

"If you tell people you're going to charge them for a paint they like it even more," said Barb Parker, a color designer with JDS Uniphase.

Of GM's 26 car manufacturing plants, only five can do a "tri-coat" process, said Webb, so paint researchers are creating some of the same effects by just adding color flakes directly into the base coat.

These developments make life even more challenging for people like Webb whose job it is to predict what colors will be popular five or more years from now.

Right now, orange is going strong and should last. "Orange sales are increasing in popularity," he said. "I've developed orange products right up to 2010."

Copper-tinged oranges can be found on everything from the Chevrolet Corvette to the Ford Edge SUV to Honda's Fit subcompact car.

Hues known in the industry as "naturals" - colors you and I would call brown and beige - are benefiting from these new color technologies. Today, browns can have a depth and richness reminiscent of expensive wood furniture. It's the sort of look that reminds one of craftsmanship and luxury rather than Silly Putty or mud.

"You're seeing a lot more consumer products offered in browns than maybe in previous years," said Jane Harrington, manager of color styling for PPG's automotive coatings division.

Greens are expected to see a resurgence as sales of hybrid vehicles increase, said Webb. People like to advertise their car's "greenness" in a fairly literal way. (Greens have been on the out lately as blues have become more popular. For some inexplicable reason, said Webb, blue and green alternate in popularity.)

Ford is working hard on, quite literally, the new black.

"Black is going to get more special and it's going to surprise and delight," said Susan Lampinen, Ford's chief designer for color and materials.

The new black will be used across Ford's line-up.

"We want to be the leaders in black," Lampinen said.

Looking ahead, the next frontier in car colors is dull. Very dull. By the 2010 model year, Webb hopes to be able to produce special car colors with no sheen to them whatsoever, as dull as a dusty kindergarten chalkboard.

"There would have to be caveats as to how to take care of the vehicles," he said.

Otherwise, someone might wax the car. That would just ruin the whole effect.
